A reader sent me a YouTube video of Doc Watson singing “Tom Dooley,” which I post above.  Do not be fooled by the major key and the peppy tempo.  Listen to his rather flat, undemonstrative voice.  This is a traditional approach to folk music.  He is concerned with presenting the song, not himself.  Now listen to the folk-pop singer, Eva Cassidy, singing “Autumn Leaves” below.  She is much more into displaying her personal take on the song – her song “stylings.”  I am not taking a stand for or against this approach, merely pointing out that this is a key difference between traditional folk music and modern popular music.
